And here you have a little guide to most of the excuses to which innocent little fans like to use when they take a picture made by someone else. They post it as their own, or worse, butcher it with super professional edits and watermarks.

This applies to:
When your art is reposted in the same website/any website you have it posted as well;
When your art is posted in any website you have not posted on;
When people alter/watermark/trace your works

So here is the list! I will add anything that any of you have gone through, that isn't on the listing :)

  1. I found it on the internet (website unknown);
  2. I found it on Google/DeviantArt/Pinterest/etc;
  3. (After being told Google gives sources and names) I didn't find it on Google, but somewhere else I don't remember;
  4. Because I found it, it's mine;
  5. I watermark pictures that I find;
  6. I worked hard on this edit!;
  7. My life is hard/ I'm hetero/homosexual / but I have this disease, so I don't know what I'm doing / any other excuse;
  8. *Ignores*;
  9. *Erases comments*;
  10. *Blocks*;
  11. It's on the internet, so I can do what I like with it;
  12. I like the art, that's why I edited it and post it;
  13. I've been hacked. I didn't do any of this;
  14. It was my brother/sister, etc. that used my account;
  15. This is my old account, I don't use anymore;
  16. I don't remember what all i posted that time;
  17. A friend send it to me;
  18. Everyone else does it. Why are you picking on me?;
  19. You should be thanking me. I'm putting your art out there for others to see. You are getting more exposure;
  20. I never said it was mine;
  21. If you didn't want it taken, then you shouldn't have put it on the internet;
  22. But I couldn't find who you were to give you credit;
  23. Duh, I wanna be famous!;
  24. If people ASK (where it comes from/who the artist is) I tell them;
  25. I have (x amount of) followers, and none of them care!;
  26. You don't even own (the characters in the picture), so it's not really yours;
  27. I'm too busy to credit/source everything that I post! I have a life, you know!
  28. The site *insert mass search engine or even DA here* owns it once you post, so it doesn't matter what I do to it;
  29. I didn't know it shouldn't be reposted/edited/etc;
  30. I don't know who the artist is;
  31. Art gets reposted and it gets lost in the mix;
  32. I can do what I want;
  33. I tried to redraw it on your style!;
  34. I redrew this, so it makes it mine;
  35. But I'm just paying tribute to (insert name);
  36. If it's fanart they can't complain, because it's not their characters, they are stealing themselves;
  37. I want to see how far I can go;

The points on this list are general and most commonly used. This is in no way a callout to any particular internet user, but to an entire community of users who don't know about respect.

Edit: Thanks all for contributing! My, look at the size of that list :O
Edit 2: Thanks once more for all the contributions! Also added a small section about questions of "how to"
Edit 3: thank you once again for helping me out ;)

i got two excuses for you

"They hacked the site to change the submission date so they can excuse me for stealing" - this is impossible to do

"I showed them the picture over skype before they posted it"
